ASSAULT ON THE SENSES

HOUSE OF CYPRUS, ATHENS 24.6.1991-24.9.1991

Assault on the Senses features works by eight emerging artists who belong to the same generation, yet differ greatly in style, areas of interest and focus, as well as in their means of expression. The selection of such a diverse group of artists for this exhibition evolved as an example of the latest developments in the current art scene where art movements are not strictly defined, and different approaches, expressions, and artistic practices coexist. Consequently, each artist enters into the contemporary art arena defining his/her own space.

The common aspect that connects the participating artists in Assault on the Senses is the pervasive sensuality emerging from the works featured. When confronted with an artwork, the observer is “assailed” or “assaulted” by a stimulus that activates a sensory receptor which, in arousing a specific sensation, formulates the basis in our perception of the piece. With the senses “assaulted,” the spectator takes his cue to gradually unravel the more profound intellectual, spiritual, and conceptual meanings and implications that lie behind the artwork.

Featuring artists who freely combine various means of expression such as computer systems and photography (Papadimitriou) or sculpture and architecture (Dokatzis and Condosfyrris), the show mirrors the pluralism and diversity of the contemporary art scene. Displayed is a whole range of attitudes, styles, media, and formal expressions so as to effectively permit the widest possible range of sensations to be experienced by the spectator and thus, promote the notion of the artwork as an assailant.
