PANOS KOULERMOS: TOPOS, MEMORY + FORM

The concepts of topos (i.e. place), memory and form in the work of architect Panos Koulermos (b. 1933) are not dealt with as a matter of reference to the current views of “critical regionalism” or the understanding of a place as a specific geographic area which is transformed through architecture. As Koulermos himself explains to John Farell “the architectural elements I use are fundamentally mnemonic, that is, they evoke a memory of formal associations. We use architectural forms to evoke memory. […]These building are all basically symbols that evoke the memory of different historical typologies. The connection with history is made through memory, not through stylistic repetition. Here, a person experiences the space, then is reminded of memory of form”. The show features recent studies and works by Panos Koulermos from the later years of his career, including the three building complexes for the University of Crete in the town of Iraklio (1985-1987) and the series Twelve House Versions in the Hellenic Space (1986-1990).
