The various debates about the antagonisms between cultural mecca’s, including which are at the periphery and which are at the center, are instrumental for the understanding of artworks. Beyond such analyses of culture, interesting art is produced when a network of interactions emerges. In recent years, it seems that such a nexus is rapidly growing, making contemporary art a more central concern in Greek life.
Conceived against the backdrop of a developing art scene, Spring Collection ’96 acts as a showcase of the art that has emerged in the last few years through the works of thirteen young artists. What appears to be critical is the idea that tradition and the past need not be reiterated or safeguarded. This artistic stance demonstrates a confidence in one’s cultural rather than national identity and is evident in the works on display.
The photographs, videos, paintings, interactive pieces, and installations in the exhibition reflect the transforming directions of contemporary Greek art. In the fashion industry, designers show the shape of things to come half a year in advance. Following in the same manner, Spring Collection ’96 is a preview of the many interesting directions contemporary Greek artists are taking.
