2000 WORDS: CHRIS OFILI
By vaulting over the conceptual divide between traditional notions of high art and pop culture, Chris Ofili’s painstakingly crafted paintings and sculptures mingle historical and religious motifs with jarring images of hip-hop machismo, Blaxploitation cinema, and, famously, varnished elephant dung. In doing so they invite us to participate in a collaborative cultural critique of the nature of beauty.
Part of the 2000 Words series, conceived and commissioned by Massimiliano Gioni, and published by the DESTE Foundation, 2000 Words: Chris Ofili presents the entirety of the artist’s works in the Dakis Joannou Collection and includes an essay by Katherine Brinson that explores the inherent dualities in Chris Ofili’s works.
