CULTURAL GEOMETRY

PUBLISHED BY THE DESTE FOUNDATION

Set in Athens, the birthplace of geometric forms, Cultural Geometry juxtaposes Greek and Cypriot antiquities with works of contemporary art to study the return to geometric motifs in art of today’s post-industrial era. Rather than focusing on the similarities between the rational geometric patterns of the ancient artifacts and the new geometric imagery of their contemporary counterparts, the show emphasizes on their differences. While the ancient objects are more concerned with the formal logic and focus of their geometric form, the contemporary artworks highlight the importance of their cultural resonance and how they function as symbols in today’s culture. For one to comprehend the importance of new art in today’s consumer society, one must develop a sense of cultural rather than formal geometry.

The catalogue of the exhibition, designed by Dan Friedman, includes texts by American art critic and curator of the show, Jeffrey Deitch, and by American artist Peter Halley.
