The Equilibrists
The Equilibrists is a collaborative project by the New Museum, New York, the DESTE Foundation, and the Benaki Museum in Athens. The exhibition, curated by Gary Carrion-Murayari, Helga Christoffersen with Massimiliano Gioni, brings together 33 artists and collectives highlighting the achievements of an exciting new generation of Greek and Cypriot artists. A testament to the perseverance of the human character in difficult times, The Equilibrists walks as a tightrope amidst the vibrations of a constantly shifting world. “Each of these artists strikes a balance between different registers of time and ways of dealing with changes in the material world,” writes curator Gary Carrion-Murayari. Against precarity and material uncertainty, faith is maintained in the physical process of object making. This catalogue features remarks on the exhibition by Lisa Phillips, Toby Devan Lewis Director of the New Museum, Oliver Descotes, Director of the Benaki Museum, and Dakis Joannou, founder of the DESTE Foundation. It also includes a text by Carrion-Murayari and full color illustrations of works by all the participating artists.
