FUSION CUISINE

DESTE FOUNDATION, NEO PSYCHICO, ATHENS 20.6.2002-30.10.2002

The DESTE Foundation presents Fusion Cuisine, an exhibition that features the work of emerging and established contemporary female artists from around the world.

Fusion Cuisine aims to provide a multi-faceted, multi-cultural, and critical approach to art being produced by women today. Consequently, the exhibition examines the various aspects of contemporary female experience and its significance within the context of their cultural origin and background.

Fusion Cuisine will not be another feminist declaration. Its aim is not to recapitulate stereotypical definitions and representations of female identity and of the experience of being a woman, but to explore post-feminist thought and art practice. It attempts to provide a platform for the ideas, preoccupations, and modes of expression of women who defy placement under a single unifying category, who do not regard their nature and identity from a single standpoint, and who do not question or stake claims in the way that traditional feminist polemics prescribe. The post-feminist character of the works presented in the exhibition entails a preoccupation with issues of universal relevance such as the issues of war, violence, consumerism, the impact of technological developments, and cultural conflict.

The exhibition includes works in all media such as installations, videos, painting, photography as well as performance. Two of the most important contemporary performance artists, Patty Chang and Tania Bruguera, have been invited to Athens especially for the purpose of presenting their work in the exhibition.
