SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT

DESTE FOUNDATION, NEO PSYCHICO, ATHENS 18.3.2004-22.3.2004

The British Council, the DESTE Foundation and the Greek Cinemateque present Shoot Shoot Shoot, a four-day film exhibition curated by Mark Webber, independent curator and member of the British music group PULP. Shoot Shoot Shoot explores the birth of British avant-garde film and the first decade (1966-76) of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative.

The London Film-Makers’ Co-operative was founded in 1966 and was unique in incorporating the three key aspects of artist filmmaking: production, distribution and exhibition within a single facility. During that time the British filmmakers made significant innovations with multi-screen films and expanded cinema events, producing works whose essence was defined by their ephemerality. Many of the works fell into the netherworld between film and fine art, never really seeming at home in either cinema or gallery spaces. Characterized by process, rigor and dynamic energy these films are a vital missing link in the history of UK art and film and remain as fresh and relevant as when they were first seen.

Shoot Shoot Shoot, is a major retrospective program and research project that re-presents many ‘lost’ works that have not been seen since the 1970s. Most films are being shown in fully restored versions which have been painstakingly recreated in collaboration with the artists.

Organized by LUX in collaboration with the British Council; the Greek Cinémathèque; and the DESTE Foundation

Sponsored by the Arts Council of England National Touring Programme; the British Council; the Esmée Fairburn Foundation; and the British Film Institute.
