SKIN

PUBLISHED BY THE DESTE FOUNDATION

The increasing preoccupation with themes of identity and the image of the self that has dominated art production in the late 20th century reflects the political and social upheavals of the last 30 years. SKIN emphasizes and explores one of the dominant trends of the ‘90s: what art historian Hal Foster identified as an “emphatic turn to the bodily and social”. Much of the work included in the show is autobiographical, emphasizing on contemporary concerns about personal identity or affirmation of self. Other works examine how experience, perception and memory are defined in terms of the body, using skin as a platform on which artists can create a physical interface with the actual world.

The show includes works by artists Gérard Pascual, Ghada Amer, Maro Michalakakos, Tony Garifalakis, Jeanne Silverthorne, Janice Sloane, Yasumasa Morimura, Shirin Neshat, Tanja Ostojic, Dennis Kardon, Tony Oursler, Marc Quinn, Mary Carlson and Kiki Smith.
