THE CAPSULE
The Capsule is a Greek Gothic mystery film by Athina Rachel Tsangari commissioned by the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art as a motion picture “capsule” for its destefashiocollection. Tsangari curated the 2012 edition by selecting avant-garde designers who boldly challenge the boundaries of fashion as wearable sculpture, re-agitating the ongoing essential dialogue between cinema, fashion, and the fine arts. The film features a distinguished all-female international cast, including Ariane Labed, winner of the Coppa Volpi for Best Actress in Tsangari’s Attenberg at the Venice Film Festival; Clémence Poésy, known for her roles in the Harry Potter series; and Isolda Dychauk, the lead in Aleksander Sokurov’s Faust.
The book, published in a limited edition of 200 copies, is furthermore a documentation of the circular collaborative process between Tsangari and her co-writer, Polish artist Aleksandra Waliszewska whose haunting paintings inspired the Capsule‘s cinematic tableaux – which in their turn inspired pictorial adaptations by Waliszewska. The Capsule had its world premier at dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel, and the Locarno film festival during the summer of 2012.
